Upon joining the Royal Air Force in a Policing role I took the opportunity to develop my skills and abilities whilst undertaking a variety of roles, all of which included the detection and prevention of crime and the protection of RAF personnel at home and overseas.
The Institute of Occupational Medicine’s (IOM) strategy is to build on our established reputation, research & services to become a leading independent ‘Trusted Partner’ for workplace & environmental health focused on exposure to hazards and to deliver long term, sustainable health improvement, protection & operational benefits to our clients. This core ethos of improving and protecting people’s health and lives not only connected with my core values but also gave me a sense of purpose of contributing something constructive to society.
The role I currently have is that of an Occupation Hygienist and UK Operations Team Leader within the Workplace Protection department. Akin to my service life no two days are the same and I am by no means tied to a desk. I have the opportunity to travel the country working with a wide variety of clients which include healthcare providers, public sector bodies and private business. I also have responsibility, with a lot of support from colleagues, managing the team of Workplace Protection engineers on day to day operations and in developing their skillset within their roles.
When I joined IOM I did not have any experience in the field of Occupational Hygiene but they recognised that I had cross over skills from my time in the RAF with an aptitude for developing new skills, they gave me the opportunity to join the company study and to develop my role as an Occupational Hygienist and more recently as the UK Operations Team Leader.
