WORKING AT FINSBURY

Creating an environment which encourages and enables high levels of individual and team performance is critical to our success. We invest in the development of all our people so they can fulfil their potential. We’re proud of our success in attracting talented individuals who want to develop their career further. Here are some of them tell you more about their stories:

PAUL THOMSON

First Line Manager, Johnstone’s Food Service

I was a Guardsman in the 1st Battalion Scots Guards. I served on various postings, both within the UK and overseas. After leaving the Army, I initially went to college to study Sports Science. After a few roles in the fitness sector, I found my way in to FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods), and eventually I moved to my current role in Finsbury as a First Line Manager.

Some of the key skills we use within Finsbury directly cross over with military life, such as the need for great communication skills, attention to detail and of course a great sense of humour. As a shift-based role, we work closely with our colleagues so having a background in teamwork will help you hit the ground running.

I have enjoyed my time with Finsbury so far. It is a fast moving, dynamic environment with plenty of scope for progression, and as a company, the values and standards align closely to military culture.

FINTAN JORDAN

Service Manager, Kara Food Service

Having served 23 years in the Royal Air Force within Logistics trade, I was unsure how I would adapt to civilian life especially within the job market.

It soon became clear that the attention to detail, organisational, leadership and logistical skills learned and developed were transferable because of the pressures encountered within the military environment. My CV showed potential with strong work ethic, motivated and discipline written all over it.

As Service Manager I look after both the Hygiene & Warehouse functions and working within the Finsbury family, I have been given additional opportunities to advance my training by recently achieving Yellow Belt Level in Lean Management as well as developing personally as a Mental Health First Aider.

Each day can be a challenge but then again, being ex-military we were made to accept the challenges.

JENNIFER WOOD

Demand Planner, Finsbury Foods

Leaving my career in the Royal Navy as a Meteorological, Oceanographic and Hydrographic Specialist and joining the civilian workforce was a very daunting prospect. What would I do? How would I fit in? Were my skills too specialist to be relevant? What would I wear to work every day when I didn’t have my coveralls? The list of questions was endless.

Once I thought carefully about it, I realised that the list of skills that I brought across with me were just as endless: My weapons training demonstrated that I could learn and implement complex procedures and perform them under immense amounts of pressure. The weather forecasts I produced showed that I could gather and analyse large amounts of data to produce targeted and relevant reports. The command briefings I led daily meant I was capable of confidently interacting and presenting my work to people at all levels. This is not to mention the timekeeping, organisational, leadership and interpersonal skills I carried with me. All of a sudden it wasn’t so scary and it just became about finding the right fit for me for my next step.

As a demand planner for Finsbury, I have found a role that uses all of my strongest skills that I took from the military and projected them in a new direction. I work as part of a great team that collaborates across all of the production sites, with people from every function. I use my data skills to analyse trends and project the forecasts that drive the production plans for bread and cake and I liaise daily with my counterparts in some of the UK’s largest retailers to ensure smooth supply of products.

With Finsbury, I have found a great employer who supports my ambition and provides me with a framework to grow and learn within an exciting and dynamic industry. Every day presents a new challenge and I get an immense sense of achievement and belonging which is everything I was looking for, with the added bonus that I don’t have to take seasickness tablets before I start work in the morning!

CAREERS

“Finsbury has given me the opportunity to rotate each year, and I have worked in three different finance roles in three different businesses, giving me a broad understanding of the finance function within the group."
